(In Colombian Spanish, the word ‘memory’ in this title is not passive, and instead encapsulates meanings of conciousness, awareness and recognition, all with a view to action and activism.)
Instead of spending their grant money from universities locking themselves away studying books in a dusty library somewhere, these psychologists and sociologists pooled their grant money to finance an imaginative artistic and investigative response to the challenges faced by marginalised communities in the Cauca región in south west Colombia.
They invited artists and activists to unite in creating the Artivista Caravan, an energetic, raucus, committed melange of circus performers, rappers, political activists, cinematographers, muralists, writers, photographers, actors and musicians, who all crowded into – and on top of – a traditional open sided chiva bus, and then – sometimes picking up on the way peasant workers waiting by the side of the road to take their sacks of fruit and ramas of plantain to market – the artivistas headed out to learn from those living on the periphery in the Cauca.
Beginning in Puerto Tejada, just south of the city of Cali, among plantain and mango trees, the chiva wound its way through a monotonous and endless landscape of industrialised sugarcane plantations – a sea of brilliant green that far from reflecting the natural beauty of the tropical Cauca river valley, instead represents the indiscriminate destruction of an exuberant and intricate biodiversity, the elimination of peasant workers’ diverse and sustainable small holding crops, and the dispossession, displacement and unravelling of entire communities and their traditional way of life – all for the short term private profit of a handful of huge sugar refining corporations.
The caravan stopped in the pueblos of Villa Rica and La Padilla to learn the stories and histories of resistance from workers such as campesino leader Valentín Charra, who prophesised that the sugarcane plantations ‘will make a desert of our land’, and from 96 year old Betsabeth Alvarez, who continues to hold out against the corporations with her small farm of cacao trees.
‘My finca is my revolution,’ she insisted, surrounded, in just her small piece of land, by more flowers, fruit trees, birds and animals, than there are in all the surrounding hundreds of kilometres of sugarcane plantations put together.
The members of the caravan shared with the local communities their skills as circus performers, photographers and artists, involving the youth of the communities in painting murals of resistance on the walls of the pueblo, and then the chiva continued on to the mountains of the cordillera to the east.
Welcomed into the autonomous indigenous Nasa territory by the Guardia Indígena, the caravan reached Toribio, a pueblo that for years has endured confrontations between guerilla fighters and paramilitaries.
The circus and theatre performers shared their talents here too, with innovative games that teach skills of solidarity and collaboration, while Nasa community leader Edwin Julico Pasu explained how Catholic priests influenced by Liberation Theology had encouraged the indigenous in Toribio to keep their native language alive, and to fight for autonomy to protect themselves from the violence that surrounded them.
Joined at each stop by activists from the communities the caravan visited, the chiva then made the long journey to the south of the Cauca, along precipitous stone and dirt tracks in the Macizo mountains to reach Santa Rita, where the local youth had been waiting expectantly and enthusiastically for hours to welcome the activists.
‘This is one of the things we wanted to create with the caravan,’ one of the organisers, Natalia Londoño declared, ‘this desire to share, through art, strategies for struggle and resistence to create a union and ties between people.’
In the pueblo scarred by paramilitary threats spray painted on the walls, community leaders related their fight against foreign mining corporations who greedily covet the water in the pristine rivers, and the gold in the earth of the mountains of the Macizo.
‘We can’t eat gold,’ said campesino leader Yamid Ordoñez, ‘and we need the water, but there are multinational corporations with their eye on the water, because it is becoming scarce in the world and they believe they can turn it into a business and make a lot of money.’
Ordoñez added: ‘As a community, in Santa Rita our principles are based on the collectivisation of our territory, where we try to make the younger generation conscious of why it is important not to split the land between individuals, but to collectivise it so noone can divide us.’
In return for sharing the stories of their struggle, the circus performers in the caravan gave an amazing performance in the tiny plaza of the pueblo, while the muralists and artists encouraged the community to join in painting a mural celebrating the water of the mountains.
‘It is a privilege to perform in these communities,’ circus organiser Diego Lagos said, ‘The transforming power of art, and the desire to defuse these social conflicts present in the Cauca are our motivations for participating in this caravan.’
The final days of the caravan’s journey saw the chiva arrive under the huge Ceiba tree in the plaza of the pueblo of Lerma, in the shadow of the mountain of the same name, sacred to the indigenous peoples of this coca growing región.
The members of the caravan made the long and arduous climb in fierce sun and torrential rain to the summit of the mountain to pay our respects and show gratitude for the welcome we had received in indigenous territory, but first, we heard from coca farmer Herney Ruiz, who explained the community’s fight for self determination.
‘It was north Americans, who came with the US Peace Corps in the 1970s, supposedly to teach us how to be so called “anti-communists”, who in fact taught Colombians how to make cocaine from coca,’ Herney related.
‘Soon, coca replaced the yucca we used to eat, and money replaced morals. We had been a self suficient community, but then came the dollars, guns, hunger and death squads. So many killings that water could not run in the streams for the bodies piled there.’
‘We had to act and to organise and achieve autonomy to take back our territory to return coca to its natural and ancestral use,’ Herney added, ‘The drug trade continues of course, but elsewhere, but to end that trade completely, Colombia needs to end with capitalism.’
During the long, hot evenings in Lerma the artists and muralists went to work again, involving the community in creating beautiful murals, while the circus performers taught children to juggle, the photographers shared their skills, and the musicians and rappers created songs to celebrate the people’s struggle.
The Artivista caravana had brought solidarity, recognition and the seeds that will make of the children that they met, artists, historians, musicians, organisers and activists.
But these pueblos on the periphery, these peoples marginalised to the point of being forgotten by the Colombia state, gave all of us on the chiva an impressive and unforgettable lesson in self determination, organisation, memory and resistance.
‘The chiva came with music, theatre and art,’ recounted Diego Lagos, ‘and we inspired the people, but more importantly, we were inspired by them.’

Paul Salgado 08/02/2019 La resistencia a las plantaciones de monocultivos industriales, la justicia para los líderes sociales, la autonomía para los territorios indígenas y la [more…]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

26
1064
post-6857","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-noticias","tag-ambiental
https://i0.wp.com/www.redcolombia.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Artevista-0247-Macizo-e1549681818824.jpg?fit=563%2C360&ssl=1
["GET
