They presented themselves at the Attorney General’s public prosecutor’s office in Yopal, the capital of the department of Casanare, to declare that they had nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to fear.

Watched by indigenous, campesino and workers’ representatives, some of whom had travelled hundreds of kilometres to witness this moment, the seven social movement leaders entered the state’s fiscalía to identify themselves to the authorities without knowing if they would be arrested and taken to jail as so many other activists have.

The solidarity of so many compañeras and compañeros – the determination to resist that was so evident in the mass silent protest in the streets of this hot, humid city – must have had an effect. All of the seven walked out of the fiscalía as free citizens.

‘This is recognition by the state of our struggle,’ declared Fabián Laverde, an activist lawyer and the Human Rights Commission organiser for the Congreso de los Pueblos. ‘This solidarity has made us stronger, but we cannot afford to lower our guard.’

The protesters also demanded freedom for social leaders Hermes Burgos and Alix Miriam Aguilar, who were arrested for their organising work in local communities in defence of territory and for a dignified life, and who remain in jail.

‘The land belongs to those who work it, just as guerrilla leader Guadalupe Salcado demanded in the 1950s,’ insisted Don Marco Polo, who had travelled two hours from Trinidad, in the llanos orinoqueños. ‘And this victory is an impetus for us to organise more.’

This campaign in defense of social leaders has united old men, still too young to have participated in the resistance in the 1950s, but who have been inspired by stories about the legendary guerrillas passed on from their grandmothers and mothers – together with young women, studying now in the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia, and who have taken the guerrilla leader’s name for their own collective as a spark to reignite the struggle against inequality and poverty.

These Colombians – the poorest, the campesinos, the discarded and dispossessed – don’t make the news headlines in Colombia’s mass media, but their confidence and their spirit will give them a place in the history of the struggle of their peoples, long after the names of corrupt governors, mayors and presidents have been forgotten.

América Leguizamon, a reporter for the local social movement’s magazine ‘Trochando Sin Fronteras’, said: ‘This demonstration has reafirmed how organising and political work is the route to a dignified life, and that despite the persecution, stigmatisation and legal actions against their social leaders, the communities will continue resisting and will unite.’

And as Esther Barreros, an organiser with the Colectivo Guadalupe Salcedo in Aguazul affirmed, ‘Such courageous acts as this challenge to the state will help us to raise our voices to demand our rights.
